3 Learning Tips For Game Design Enthusiasts
By Robert Sutter
There are many art forms - this goes without saying - but I am of the opinion that game design is one of the most appealing in this day and age. One of the reasons for this is because gaming has developed into a worldwide hobby and, more specifically, one that has reached out to many ages and backgrounds. Designers are needed in order for these games to be created, though. For those who are still learning, here is a list of 3 tips that will help your progress.
1. As a game designer, you have to make it a point to stand out. In my view, the video game market is one of the most diverse but the problem is that many developers like to look at what is trendy and work off of that. For example, even though series like Call of Duty and Super Mario are some of the most prominent, the truth of the matter is that emulating said series takes away the idea of creativity. In order to stand out, do not cast aside a creative concept you might have in mind.
2. It is important to understand that science is needed in order for this particular art to excel. Game design is meant to be a creative platform and I do not think that anyone can argue with such a point. With that said, science is needed as well since game design is done through computers. The understanding of such elements as coding is integral in order for games to be created. If such a level of understanding is not seen, games are ideas and nothing more.
3. Staying up-to-date with developing trends in the gaming industry should not go overlooked. This is especially true when the video game business is, for the most part, a rapidly-changing field. Sometimes a story may go unnoticed but you have to make it a point to read up and understand the developments that you, as a student, can make use of in the future. The more that you pick up on in the media, the better of a career you will have once you graduate.
Hopefully these points have given you a better understanding of what is needed from you in the realm of game design. It is clear that there is a lot of work that goes into this level of art but it is a challenge that is more than worth tackling. After all, most students in this field are ones who have grown up with gaming and want to be able to etch their own mark in the industry as well. These tips will be able to help budding designers along the way.
